Fall is in the air!!

There have been one or two opportunities this past week where it seemed that the air was slightly brisker and the heat was slightly less sweltering.. Maybe it was a temporary cool front, or maybe (fingers crossed) it is a sign that fall us on the way!

Today we stopped at Sweet Pete's as a special surprise for the kids. It's the land of treats and chocolates... Sugar and lollipops. There isn't another place in town that appreciates a good fall candy-loving holiday like Halloween. So, despite the heat, we pretended it was fall and almost Halloween for a bit.

Boo!

Me and the goblin

Scary yummy goodness!

We need guinea pigs like we need a hole in our heads....

That is why we are 'borrowing' them!!

The preschool has two guinea pigs named Daisy and Petunia in the Discovery Science room. L has been asking for a pet and so I thought this would be a great opportunity to have a pet, but return it after a few days. Ha!

Both of them have had a blast feeding them and watching them. I don't really have a blast smelling them, but it's a small price to pay for sweet kid giggles and free pet rentals.

Is it Friday yet??? Oh, wait...

There should be a rule in life : no flat tires on Fridays.

The day started off unremarkable, which is remarkable these days... We thought we were just going to have a fun day of school shopping with Mimi and Chief, but the menacing aforementioned tire trouble had to rear it's ugly head again. Turns out that a rear tire had a nail in it! Apparently the damage couldn't be repaired and it required a new tire.. And apparently you need to replace tires in pairs... Just a little extra cost to twist the knife a little more. ;)

So.. Despite me complaining in jest, I'm actually just beyond thankful that nothing happened to us while driving in NC or on our drive home.

We ended up doing some shopping, having lunch and going to the kid's well check at the pediatricians office.

Joshua is in the 50th percentile for height and 20th for weight. He seemed to be in around an overall percentile of about 30th. So, a beast compared to Lil... but not giant in the real world. She did detect a small heart murmur, but we are just going to keep an eye on it and she doesn't think it is anything major at the moment. Overall she was really impressed with his sweet disposition and how well he mimicked her. She said that she thinks he will be the type of kid that may talk later, but starts off and then you can't stop him... So with him about to take steps and judging by his older sister... I think both his legs and mouth should be running very soon. Ha!

Lil is doing great as well. She is in the 3rd percentile!! She is on the charts, people!! The doctor commented that her focus and articulation were impressive, which I think we already knew. She had a great visit... The doctor let her listen to her own heart and to Joshua's heart.. And she managed her anxiety really well. She discovered that telling the doctors and nurses how she felt about things made her feel better... So that was super cute to watch.

Here is to a great week before the grind begins again!!

Pisgah National Forest

Today we enjoyed some much needed cousin and family time as we hiked through a sea of green forest. The Pisgah National Forest was awesome! First we stopped at the visitor center and ranger station for information. While there the ranger pointed out a very unique moth that had landed on a leaf that was similar in color... A camouflage science lesson at its finest!

Then we headed to the discovery center and adventure trail. At the discovery center the girls completed a scavenger hunt, and they all received a wooden nickel for the superb performance!

Then we stopped at the local food spot. It was fantastic. We sat at a table outside and enjoyed the beautiful weather. They had tree blocks and rocking chairs.. And the food was good to boot too! (My fried green tomato BLT was delish!)

Then we went for a hike on a paved trail... And along the way we encountered hills, waterfalls, an out of service locomotive for play and climbing, tree stump jumping steps, a log horse, old style road diggers that provided oodles of entertainment and balance beam action... And a rattlesnake!! It was a fabulous day.

No pictures of the snake!! We were too busy running by it!

Downtown Hendersonville - NC

We started off the day with a mountain sized breakfast to help curb our mountain sized hunger. The mountain air does that to you. ;) L had her favorite.. Chocolate chip pancakes!!

Then we hit up Downtown Hendersonville, which is a personal favorite of mine. We went to the Children's Hands On Museum, made a stop into the rock museum, and then of course checked out the Dancing Bear Toy Shop and some other local spots on Main Street.

Pretending to be a veterinarian and doing some painting at Hands on:

Quartz as big as Joshua at the museum...

And one of the highlights of the day.. The bears on Main Street! Armed with her camera, Lil took pictures of all the bears we could find. This one is for Mary and Chief:

A Day in the Park

"Even the best laid plans..."

At the breakfast table this morning L helped us make a to-do list for the day of all of the adventures and errands that we needed to run. First stop was 'the talking trees'. We have never been before and so it was highly anticipated. Unfortunately an error light on the dash of the van had us heading to the Hendersonville tire shop instead. All is well with the car, but we ended up heading to the park instead.

Sometimes you never know where the day will take you...
